When a stand-up comedian writes a book, the audio version enjoys a clear advantage over the printed word. Timing, delivery and vocal expression are as important to humor as the actual joke itself. So it is with this very funny collection of essays, monologues, observations and jokes by 30-year comic veteran Carlin. A one-liner like "I put a dollar in a change machine. Nothing changed," moderately amusing in print, is hilarious in Carlin's bewildered tone. This audio contains "unabridged excerpts," which means that though it does not include everything from the book, the pieces that appear are performed in their entirety. The audio is paced nicely, alternating between long pieces (Carlin as a bureaucratic caveman calling a "staff meeting" to announce a new policy on human sacrifices), short observations and one-liners. Some of Carlin's older routines are included, such as his classic comparison of warlike football and friendly baseball. Carlin, the thinking man's comedian, is known for his fresh and weirdly funny take on life. This book's title accurately descibes what's inside; these bits seem to have come tumbling out of Carlin's brain in random order. Some are laugh-out-loud funny and some are . . . well, just droppings. Among the funnier bits are Carlin's musings on names. He perceptively notes that one day nursing homes will be filled with Tiffanys, Ambers, and Ashleys--a scary thought. Then there's Carlin's ruminations on verbs. People used to take drugs, now they do drugs, although some people do lunch and take meetings. The book is also periodically interrupted with lists of Carlin's signature oxymorons and redundancies: new tradition, uninvited guest, and standard options are among the former, and close proximity and serious crisis among the latter. The book is rather annoyingly designed with bold headings that don't mean much ("F*** Al Jolson," for instance). Bad words, by the way, abound, but if you know Carlin's work, you'd expect that. A few of the bits are outright clunkers, but maybe we should cut Carlin a little slack. As one of his headings notes, "Most people are not particularly good at anything." Ilene Cooper

This book takes you from two to 2,000. Like the Eye itself, it's a heck of a ride.It's standard now to be a great fan of the Eye. But the book skillfully catalogs a different time: that of the beginnings when skepticism and, in some cases, outright hostility threatened to kill the idea in its infancy. It took a couple of well-placed supporters in the press (writer Mira Bar-Hillel and editor Stewart Steven of the Evening Standard) and business (CEO Bob Ayling of British Airways) to make the idea fly.Still, there was a time when all the smart money and the bandwagon was lined up behind the lamentable Millennium Dome. This is an excellent, inexpensive and clear explanation of perspective. ***It also has a chapter on perspective and getting cast shadows right.*** You might say that you draw or paint from photographs so you don't think you need this but you are wrong. Lenses often distort lines and if you copy what the camera shows you the picture will not look right. I have seen horrible distortions of buildings and windows by artists who should have known better. I, myself, have made mistakes when merging photographs - adding a few buffalo to the background of foreground buffalo - and realizing after framing that the rear most animal could not possibly be that large. Oops. Even buffalo out in a field must obey the laws of perspective! The basics of perspective are easy to understand. The book also covers some very complex information too for the more advanced artist. But with patience and repeated study over time it...well, heck, it STILL can be confusing but some knowledge is much better than no knowledge and you get the hang of it over time. Do buy this book -- it is relatively painless.

I've listened to, watched or read many instructors trying to teach perspective in simple terms to budding artists and have always had a nagging suspicion that they had it wrong, but couldn't explain why. When is the CORRECT time to use one, two, or three point perspective? When are edges that are not dead center in front of you CORRECTLY portrayed as parallel? Complex perspective texts meant for draftsmen with ruler and t-square didn't do it for me. Finally I stumbled on this book originally printed almost 50 years ago. Joseph D'Amelio does an excellent job of explaining the complexities of perspective to us artists that must deal with it using only a pencil and our own eyes and judgement.For the teacher that thinks this text is too complex for beginner's, use it as a resource for YOU to correctly teach these concepts to your students. For all who think this is too complex and wordy, I can only guess that we are reviewing completely different books.

Good book. I came to perspective late in life and wish I had made myself far more receptive. LPerspective for me was an architects skill and not an artists. Perspective is so vital to anyone's drawing. Without it your drawings will probably look rather goofy. This is not the be all and end all books of Perspective so I believe it is essential that you have a few good perspective books that address the topic from different points of view. I have found this to be so with me. If you are smarter than me, which you most likely are, you should still have a few good perspective books to refer to.

This book was simple and easy to follow and learn from.I found the material inside very helpful.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in perspective.

There is so much information packed into this book!! Hadn't taken perspective since high school and wanted a refresher course --- this book is just what I needed. It covers vanishing points, special vanishing points, and even working with cylinders and cones. Recommend this book for anyone who wants perspective line drawing clearly explained.

I bought this book as a reference book to draw perspectives. It is okay and explains perspectives in a simple understanding way. I have other books that go into much more detail but this is a good book just for a quick review of 1, 2 and 3 point perspectives.

This book is a classic. It doesn't make it any easier to understand or ingest, however. If you are thinking of buying this book, I hope that you have some sort of foundation in perspective drawing beforehand. If you don't, this book might be helpful later on, after you do. Think twice. There are easier ways to learn this stuff.

This is currently my favorite perspective book!I love this book because it's clear, concise, slim & to the point. It's very enlightening! In my opinion, Joseph D' Amelio was a genius in his understanding of perspective & his ability to communicate this to others. The text may be a little academic by today's standards, but it's still easily worth getting. He uses the words "parallel" and "perpendicular" a lot, because he's being precise in his communication. Because this book is so slim, clear & reasonably priced, I highly recommend this to anyone & *everyone* interested in learning about perspective-based drawing. Even if it doesn't become everyone's favorite overall, it's certainly worth having in any collection, as perspective is such an important topic that it's really best to buy a number of books. And if we're going to buy a number of books, it might be helpful to know which are the *best* while at the same time being reasonably priced. This is at the top of my list!Three-point perspective is covered here, although he actually avoids this term and instead calls this "looking up & down". It's simplistic in its approach, but that's what great teachers are about: taking difficult concepts & making them easy to understand. And as mentioned, while the writing may at times be a little stiff, this book relies mostly on visuals, which are entirely in black & white and mostly in pen & ink. Perspective Drawing Handbook: my highest recommendation!P.S. My current Top 3 perspective books include: Perspective Drawing Handbook; Perspective Made Easy; and then Perspective! For Comic Book Artists.P.P.S. An interesting observation: there is at least one visual error in this book. On page 55, there are common objects depicted in 3-point perspective, as often seen when we're looking down. The bed on this page has vertical lines converging in the wrong direction(!). In every other picture on this page, the vertical lines are, accurately, converging downwards. With the bed, we get the opposite(!). How this found its way into print is beyond me, but I still think this book is great.
